. she had been a teacher at the sandy hook elementary school. the school's principal dawn hochsprung was among those killed and tonight a friend remembered her as "quote, the kind of person you would want to be educating your kids. school psychologist mary sherlock was also kilged. this afternoon afternoon the brother, ryan lanza was taken in for questioning by police and he was handcuffed. officials did not label him a suspect. the gunman's father was also questioned in relation to what happened here today. tonight, a nation in mourning. candle light vigils were held in newtown and across the country. there was one just outside of the white house in washington, d.c. earlier today, president obama ordered flags to be flown at half staff nationwide in tribute to the victims of this terrible tragedy. in an emotional address, he said this to the nation. >> i know there's not a parent in america who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that i do. the majority of those who died today were children. beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. they had their entire liv

at the sandy hook elementary school here in this small connecticut town. 20 children were killed. 18 of them were pronounced dead right at the scene of the school. two of them were rushed to the hospital, hoping that they could save them. those children died at the hospital. six adults at the school were also shot dead. and they died at the scene as well. nancy lanza, a teacher at the school and a mother of the suspected shooter, was also killed. but she was found dead in her son's home in newtown. adam lanza, the 24-year-old brother ryan lanza, was taken into police custody. ryan lanza taken into police custody for questioning in hoboken, new jersey, earlier today. officials had not labeled him a suspect. but he was taken away in handcuffs. his brother adam died at the scene. but police are not saying at this point if he killed himself. police did say that they did not discharge any of their weapons and yet he was dead on the scene. law enforcement sources also telling cnn that the shooter in this horrible tragedy was dressed in "black battle fatigues and a military vest." the principal of
. but the district superintendent said today that students and teachers from sandy hook elementary will not actually be going back to school until january, after winter break. there were also funerals today for two more 6 year olds. jessica rekos and james mattioli. we'll have more on those memorials later on in our show. first, we wanted to bring you the very latest that we know about the investigation. our national correspondent susan candiotti has new details. she is outside the lanza home tonight. susan, what can you tell us, the very latest that you have been able to figure out about why this happened? >> reporter: well, i'll tell you, if the shooter in this case was trying to erase his digital footprint, he may have succeeded. because investigators are telling us that that smashed computer that you referred to was so badly damaged, presumably by the shooter himself, that they are having a hard time retrieving data from the hard drive. but they're not giving up. they're still working on it because they want to try to examine it for any e-mails he might have sent, for any writings he left behind
